Tumescent liposuction has somehow changed the way doctors perform fat removal surgery, also called liposuction surgery. The procedure has become safer for patients and more effective when it comes to removing bulging, excess fat, including very fibrous fat that is often hard to remove.

But with the use of the technique known as tumescent solution, liposuction can now be done without using intravenous sedation and general anesthesia. Patients typically don’t need any other pain medications for up to 36 hours after their treatment because the effect of lidocaine is prolonged due to the constricted blood vessels.

Aside from this, liposuction is now known to be a lot safer with the use of slimmer cannulas. These are the stainless steel tubes that are inserted into the subcutaneous fat in order to remove it from the body.

This type of instrument now comes with a more slender body, less than 3 millimeters in diameter, and is more effective when it comes to getting rid of fat without the risk of scarring. This is a lot better than the earlier cannulas that were used as they tended to be thicker, about 6mm in diameter, thus requiring larger incisions, which often resulted in more visible scars.

Surgeons nowadays are using cannulas that are power-assisted to produce more accurate vibrations in order to dislodge the fat with minimal effect on the tissues surrounding the targeted area.

This is much better than the manual liposuction technique, where the instruments were thrust back and forth, which resulted in higher surgical traumas to the body tissues. In addition, the power-assisted cannula can now eliminate almost 30 percent more fat compared to traditional liposuction.
