People have three primary skin layers; the epidermis (surface layer), dermis (below the surface) and hypodermis or subcutaneous tissue layer (below the dermis layer).

The epidermis houses the skin cells, chains of amino acids, and pigments. The very top and first layer of the epidermis consists of keratinized or dead skin cells. Skin treatment exfoliates this layer to make the skin look better and younger. The dermis also contains skin cells, along with oil and sweat glands, blood vessels, nerves, and hair follicles among other things.

The dermis and hypodermis both have many of the same elements, except that the hypodermis also includes fat. Each layer contains a connective tissue that is supported by collagen fibers, which provides condition and support to the skin. Production of collagen naturally decreases with age, which decreases skin elasticity, resulting in thinning and sagging of the skin as years go by.

This process of changing the skin should be treated with utmost sensitivity as improper treatment can cause serious damage.
